North Carolina State Emissions & Safety Inspection Explained

Commercial trucks operating in North Carolina must pass a safety and emissions inspection before the registration is issued or renewed. Inspections must be completed within 90 days of vehicle registration renewal. The safety section of the state inspection must be completed by a certified technician who checks the essential safety components detailed in the inspection checklist. Commercial trucks in Gaston County and 21 other North Carolina counties are also subjected to an emissions inspection performed alongside the safety inspection. Vehicle registrations are void if the inspection is not completed by the due date.

Safety Inspection

The safety inspection is designed to check primary systems and components related to vehicle safety. A certified technician will check all necessary components required by North Carolina, including the head/tail lights, turn signals, brake pedal, parking brake, tires, horn, mirrors, exhaust system, windshield wipers, and window tint if applicable.

Emissions Inspection

The emissions inspection includes a visual exhaust component evaluation and onboard diagnostic system reading. This ensures that your commercial truck complies with quality standards set forth by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Ford commercial trucks with diesel engines are exempt from the emissions inspection.

What Happens for Failure to Pass the Inspection?

Waivers can be issued under certain conditions related to failed emissions testing; however, all commercial trucks must pass the safety inspection portion. We can assist with the repair needed to fix the cause of failed emissions inspections and restore your truck to EPA guidelines.
