What a Conventional Oil Change Includes
A conventional oil change is a fairly simple task which assures your car continues to run properly as the internal valves and moving parts are properly lubricated to reduce friction and the associated wear and tear. It starts with a visual inspection of the oil level and quality if it appears low or exceptionally dirty there might be a further problem to address.
Then the oil is drained, the oil filter removed and replaced, and the drain plug replaced along with a new gasket. New oil is poured in, the car is removed from the lift, and is ready to drive again. The process takes about 20-30 minutes when an appointment is scheduled, or there might be a short wait time for walk-in customers.

Why You Need to Change Engine Oil
There are multiple reasons to change engine oil. The first - over time, oil breaks down and fails to perform its function as intended. The oil heats up and cools down every time you drive and the process, over time, changes the molecule structure of the oil.
Second - a more physical aspect of the oil change is that moving metal parts can, on a microscopic level, flake a bit, or gaskets and their sealant glue can break down, fouling the oil with grit and grime.
Third - outside dust can pollute the oil or internal condensation can form, diluting the oil and impeding its proper lubricating properties.
One final consideration is that changing the oil allows the mechanic to inspect the engine and the oil, and if the first three problems are happening at a faster rate than typically expected, find the reason and correct it before a worse problem develops.
What Can Happen if Your Oil Isn't Changed
In most cases, if the oil isn't changed, the car won't provide the performance expected of it, or it might begin to get poor gas mileage. Such problems are usually corrected with an oil change even if it is later than recommended, assuming it hasn't caused permanent damage yet.
Going too long without an oil change will eventually lead to the cylinders freezing up and a complete break down which requires major repairs to fix, potentially more expensive repairs than the value of the vehicle.
