The Importance of Good Wheel Alignment

As Americans, we love our cars, trucks, and other automobiles, and there's a good reason why. There is a heck of a lot of terrific things to drive to in these 50 states. But imagine going on that big road trip or vacation you’ve been dreaming about with terrible wheel alignment. It can destroy your ride quality and can drive your gas mileage down to abysmal levels. Proper wheel alignment can help deliver smooth ride quality, and improve fuel efficiency. But most importantly, properly aligned wheels will save your vehicle massive amounts of wear and tear that would cost a lot of money to repair down the road.

What Causes Poor Wheel Alignment?

Misalignment happens over time naturally as a normal part of regular use. But hitting potholes, curbs, and traveling down bumpy roads can accelerate the development of bad alignment. Your vehicle may be badly aligned even if it looks and feels like the alignment is fine. That’s because the wheels are too far apart for us to be able to judge alignment by looking at them. It only takes a fraction of a centimeter for bad alignment to generate some undesirable results, especially when traveling at high speeds. What’s more, because we cannot judge the alignment with our eyes, special instruments are needed to test the alignment.

How is Alignment Measured?

The alignment of your wheels is measured in terms known as camber, caster, and toe. This is not a complete list of the terms used in understanding alignment, but it’s a good place to start.

Camber: This is the inward or outward leaning of a wheel. It is the easiest to spot, as a wheel with too much camber will wobble visibly.

Caster: This is the “rotation” of the wheel along an imaginary line running from the top of the wheel into the ground.

Toe: Toe represents a deviation from side to side. Imagine your feet are tires. If you point them toward each other- that is analogous to what is called “toe-in.” If you point your toes away from each other that is analogous to “toe-out.”
